CHAIR OF THE SESSION
Associate Professor, Sanskrit
Department of Sanskrit, St. Stephen’s College, Delhi,
University of Delhi Delhi-110007

I, Dr. Pankaj K. Mishra, Associate Professor in the Department of Sanskrit at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. I firmly believe in exploring, developing and propagating new methodologies for educating young minds and so have been working meticulously towards this for nearly the last 3 decades. And none of this would have been achievable without exposure and support, which I gained from attending seminars and conferences across the nation and the world. These include the World Sanskrit Conferences (Delhi, Bangkok and Vancouver), Imperial College London and Dhaka (Bangladesh) notably.
Being a learner of philosophy, literature, history and epigraphy, Indian culture and similar spheres, blended with a keen desire to indite those ideas, I have authored nine books so far. Some of them are prescribed to the students by the various universities including DU and Jamia Millia Islamia.
As an academician, I have received several prestigious Awards and Honours, the latest of which is ‘V. K. Thakur Memorial Award’ for my book Cārvāka. I have presented over 100 papers in many International and National seminars, delivered over 65 lectures in various interdisciplinary conferences and more than 25 papers have been published. In these days I have been delivering lectures on various topics in series for MOOC on Gurukul Portal of CEC, UGC.
I contributed to Curriculum Development of the University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia and played a major role in the textbook development committee for the NCERT.
I am also a member of different committees and societies of various schools, colleges and universities in my ambit, so as to promote education and prosperity in the best of my possibilities.

ABSTRACT
Samarāngaņa-sūtradhāra: An Encyclopedic work on the Architecture

Indian Architecture encompasses a multitude of expressions over space and time constantly absorbing new ideas. The result is an evolving range of architectural production that nonetheless retains a certain amount of continuity and its own individuality, across history. Amongst all those architectural contributions of Indian Intellectual tradition, Samarāngaņa-sūtradhāra, of the King Bhoja of Dharanagari, is an encyclopedic work. It is attributed to a vast number of subjects under the general heading of Vastu. His work can be classified as belonging to the Northern Vastu tradition. The text presents itself as such, by tracing its own origin to the divine architect Visvakaraman rather than Maya, as a Southern text would do. One interesting section describes the king’s palace, commending a particular type of location, shape and distribution of inner sections. What makes this portion worthy of attention is that it was Bhoja’s own actual palace site- which opens up a good possibility of comparative analysis between textual practices and their application on the ground. Chapter 18 of this text specializes in various types of towns, dwells and their sub parts. It has 58 verses with the name of नगरादिसंज्ञा. In this chapter we find the variety of buildings like हर्म्य, प्रासाद, सौध, अट्टालिका, चैत्य etc. Defining Capital he says that where the kings reside is known as राजधानी-

यत्रास्ते नगरे राजा राजधानीं तु तां विदु:।
शाखानगरसंज्ञानि ततोऽन्यानि प्रचक्षते॥2॥

Similarly, by naming नगर, मंदिर, दुर्ग, पुष्कर, निवास, सदन, सद्म etc. the text also gives a detail accounts of contemporary buildings, eg.-

नगरं मंदिरं दुर्गं पुष्करं सांपारायिकम्।
निवास: सदनं सद्म क्षय: क्षितिलयस्तथा॥

It also includes a chapter on flying machines that has elicited a certain amount of curiosity in recent times. This text, by all means, is placing Vastu within a wider context and also, locating a great variety of specialized topics and activities such as choosing materials, building machines, identifying regional temple-styles, and so forth within the broader framework architecture. It incorporates Vastu into the world and the world into the Vastu.
