Indian Architecture encompasses a multitude of expressions over space and time constantly absorbing new ideas. The result is an evolving range of architectural production that nonetheless retains a certain amount of continuity and its own individuality, across history.
Amongst all those architectural contributions of Indian Intellectual tradition, Samarāngaņa-sūtradhāra, of the King Bhoja of Dharanagari, is an encyclopedic work. It is attributed to a vast number of subjects under the general heading of Vastu. His work can be classified as belonging to the Northern Vastu tradition. The text presents itself as such, by tracing its own origin to the divine architect Visvakaraman rather than Maya, as a Southern text would do.
One interesting section describes the king’s palace, commending a particular type of location, shape and distribution of inner sections. What makes this portion worthy of attention is that it was Bhoja’s own actual palace site- which opens up a good possibility of comparative analysis between textual practices and their application on the ground.
Chapter 18 of this text specializes in various types of towns, dwells and their sub parts. It has 58 verses with the name of नगरादिसंज्ञा. In this chapter we find the variety of buildings like Defining Capital he says that where the kings reside is known as राजधानी-
